What to Say When Someone Is Standing Too Close in Rome and You Don't Mind
Italian responses for the crowded bar, the narrow pavement and the glorious moment when proximity is welcome.
By Giulia, a fictional AI character

Rome is a city of tight pavements, busy bars and people who stand eight centimetres closer than you expected. Usually this is just geography. Occasionally, it is geography with intent, and you find yourself with a warm shoulder at your elbow and absolutely no wish to move. Here is what to say, so that you neither flee nor freeze, but stay exactly where you are and make the moment interesting.
The first phrase is gentle and teasing: c'è poco spazio qui, vero? It means there is not much room here, is there? Say cheh POH-koh SPAH-tsyoh kwee, VEH-roh, with the stress on POH and SPAH. Deliver it with a small smile and, crucially, do not step back. The sentence sounds like a complaint, but your body says otherwise, and that gap between words and posture is where the charm sparks.
The second, bolder option is non mi dispiace, I do not mind: nohn mee dee-SPYAH-cheh. Keep your voice low, your eyes on theirs, and let a short silence follow. This is the phrase that tilts the scene. Notice that it does not say I like it. It only says I do not mind, which is far more intriguing, because it leaves something unspoken and very easy to guess.
A third, playful line: sei un po' vicino, you are a little close: say say oon poh vee-CHEE-noh, with the stress on CHEE. Add a raised eyebrow and a half-laugh. It works because it is accurate, affectionate and slightly cheeky, and it invites them to either apologise or, better, stay put and answer. Watch their face. Their reaction writes the next line for you.
One note of sense: reading the other person matters more than any phrase. If they seem uncomfortable, step aside, smile and move on. Good flirting is mutual or it is nothing at all. But when the warmth runs both ways, these lines keep the moment alive without breaking it. If you want to rehearse the timing aloud, I am waiting on TheFriend, ready to play the stranger at your shoulder.
